Justin McKenzie WSSU: Distance Learning

Justin McKenzie of WSSU spent six years as a Director and Chief Technology Officer at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he was responsible for directing the University’s efforts in distance education and research computing

Distance Education has become increasingly common in today’s world, but when Justin McKenzie of WSSU was directing it, the concept was still taking shape. As he knows, distance learning, generally defined, means providing education and instruction to a student is his not physically present in the classroom. In short, students work remotely, typically from their homes via the Internet.

Technology is a critical component of distance education, and this is one of the things that holds such great appeal to an IT professional like Justin McKenzie of WSSU. At Southern Miss, he was responsible for the strategic planning, designing and building of the video-based technological infrastructure that made distance learning possible there.

The distance learning that Justin McKenzie of WSSU helped to put in place at Southern Miss was part of what has been called the third generation of distance learning. It incorporated the latest technological developments to replicate, as much as possible, the traditional classroom model by using synchronous interactive technologies such as video conferencing. In the years since, it has been enhanced by what is called the fourth generation of distance learning, which involves the Internet and enables the student to learn and proceed through coursework at his or her own pace. With this flexibility, students are able to learn at any time and at just about any place.
